On Dec. 9, prosecutors arrested suspect Luigi Mangione for the murder of United Healthcare Chief-Executive Office Brain Thompson. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pa., and was charged with murder and weapon charges.
Mangione was identified inside a McDonald’s in Altoona, PA and police found him in possession of multiple fake IDs, a U.S. passport and clothing. Back in N.Y., an arrest warrant shows that Mangione faces a second-degree murder charge, and the charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
A gun found on Mangione matched the three shell casings found at the site of the shooting, and his fingerprints also matched those found on a water bottle and snack bar wrapper discarded near the crime scene.
The case has drawn attention not just for the murder, but because of Mangione’s background and his Ivy League education.
Reports that a grand jury has gathered in the case come after days of new developments: On Dec. 11, N.Y. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference that the gun found on the suspect matched the shell casings that were found at the scene of Thompson’s death (police have previously said the gun is suspected to be 3D-printed).
