With meaning and inspiration behind each message, the walls of the Palmetto make statements with various paintings and murals. Students walk by these walls each day without noticing the aesthetic beauty of them, as well as the true representation of Palmetto given off by each colorful scene.
Throughout the school, one will see multiple paintings, plaques and sculptures with the words “Vis Per Scientiam” written on them. This is translated from Latin as “strength through knowledge”. As the school’s motto, this phrase fully embodies all that Palmetto aspires to be.
Each time a student passes by this symbolic motto, whether it be on the wall next to the cafeteria or near the stage in the auditorium, each mean to inspire and remind students of what is expected of them.
“I like walking around the school and seeing different messages through art on the walls,” junior Kiersten Hielman said. “They remind you of what our school resembles and that it is united under common aspirations.”
With countless extra curricular classes offered, students often lose sight of the responsibilities they hold at school. “Vis Per Scientiam” reinforces the idea that students need to put their knowledge before all and take full advantage of the academic opportunities that Palmetto has to offer.
“I think Vis Per Scientiam really does represent our school well,” junior Hunter Nash said. “The students here really do try and make an example out of this school and its academics.”
Printed boldly and proudly on the school logo, this motto hopes to inspire students that with knowledge, they will be able to overcome all difficulties and accomplish what they set their minds to.
The more one learns, the stronger and more adept they will become. Throughout the visual reminders around school, “Vis Per Scientiam” continues to teach students excellence, responsibility and integrity.
