When it comes to fun class events and getting the student body’s spirit up, Miami Palmetto Senior High School’s class boards are the ones working behind the scenes. These boards consist of members from their respective classes ensuring their class levels’ events are taken care of, raising money for future events and making sure they are showing class as well as school spirit.
The freshman board has hosted fundraisers and events around and outside MPSH.
“We have had a few fundraisers, like Chipotle and Lime,” freshman class board treasurer Lucy Dwyer said. “We have also done courtyard events like our Valentine’s Day event. It had a station to write self-love sticky notes, face painting and a ‘Guess the kisses in the jar’ guessing game.”
The freshmen class has also started selling merchandise and is hosting a campus clean-up.
“Our clean-up will be on March 13 and another on March 20 after school and is open to anyone wanting to join,” Dwyer said.
The sophomore class board now has a year of experience under their belts.
“[The class board is to help] raise the spirit and oversee the class and to listen to what [the students] want to plan for events,” sophomore class president Ruby Pelz said. “So, as the president of the class board, I oversee everything the sophomore class wants. I am in charge of social media. I plan the events [with the rest of the board].”
The sophomore class board has been creative with their courtyard events, planning days where sophomores could come together and have fun.
“We held a lot of fun events at the beginning of the year. On Oct. 26, we had a 10/26 day because we’re in 10th grade, and the class of 2026 … It was a really fun day because we just got everyone to wear yellow and just have the day to celebrate the sophomore class. [March 6], we did ‘sophomOreos,’ because it was national Oreos day,” Pelz said. “It is just great to see people show up and great to get the class involved.”
Along with their in-school events, the class board has made sure to continue raising money for their class with various fundraisers.
“We have had a bunch of fundraisers, such as ones at Chipotle, Chill’N and Lime,” sophomore class secretary Andie Gussin said. “We also just got our class quarter zips, which was also a fundraiser.”
The fundraising money goes towards an assortment of things for the class of 2026, especially activities for their senior year.
“Fundraisers help us make the costs limited when it comes to senior year [activities like] prom, Grad Bash and the senior picnic. This way, hopefully, the tickets won’t be as expensive,” Pelz said. “The money we collect through fundraisers also gives us the ability to have more fun events to get the class more involved.”
The junior class has had a packed year full of events and fundraisers to gear up for their senior year. This means some busy times for the class board.
“I’m president of the junior class board [and] it depends seasonally [what I do]. At the beginning of the year, it is very much homecoming focused, with planning Panther Prowl and getting people to come together,” junior class president Sydney Lambert said. “[Being class president also means] making sure that everything is getting done and a lot of delegating; it is making sure that everyone on board is on task … whether that is the treasures planning fundraising events or our secretaries taking the notes and submitting them on time. It is also just staying in touch with student council and Mrs. Valero.”
Fundraising is a necessity for junior year, as senior year activities are not too far away.
“We’ve held multiple fundraisers throughout the year like Chill’N, Lime, Panera, Burger-Fi,” Lambert said.
A large portion of senior year fundraising also came from Edda’s cakes and magazine event that was held from Nov. 26 through Dec. 10, 2023.
The junior class has also had an assortment of events throughout the school year. Whether that be at the beginning of the year, coming to school with their ‘Junior Js’ or being a part of Prowl and their first place finish in the car parade.
“We have done a lot of events. We were obviously a part of Prowl. We did a Valentine’s Day event in the courtyard and we have been selling merch throughout the year,” Lambert said.
Senior year is when it gets the most exciting. All the fundraising from the past three years leads up to the senior events. The senior class board is in charge of making sure all these events are possible.
“[We] make sure that everyone has the best senior year possible. We are in charge of planning all the senior events, making the senior shirt, all our homecoming competitions and things like that,” senior class co-president Ruben Behar said. “We make sure the seniors stay informed with all the announcements and all the things they need to do because there is a lot going on during senior year.”
The class board is behind each event that the seniors participate in.
“We started off with homecoming with Panther Prowl, and this year we had our car decorating contest. Now, we have been working on the senior picnic and planning our prom theme reveal,” Behar said. “We have just been planning lots of events for seniors and we have a lot of fun stuff coming up ahead for these last couple months of school.
On top of planning the fun of it all, the senior board also has to make sure all the events run smoothly, and is something the class body is excited for.
“[Besides] the themes and we also make sure the logistics of everything [goes to plan]. It is making sure the events are going to work for all the teachers and making sure that it is something that the students want to do,” Behar said. “We are just trying to make sure that everything happens and it’s fun for everyone.”
Each and every class board continuously makes sure that their class is happy and informed with everything happening throughout school and for their individual classes. Each class board has fundraisers to plan and the exciting events students look forward to.
