In relationships, it is often said, “What is yours is mine,” but is that always true? Politics are a difficult topic of conversation for many, while others know it is not necessarily dinner-table talk, does that exclude it from pillow talk?
Having a partner who does not agree politically can be difficult. Depending on how extreme their beliefs are, it could make it tough to deal with world issues.
While politics can sometimes be a huge joke and cause even the most politically informed to laugh, it has become a way to communicate with others. Whether it is in disagreement or agreement, Americans’ social life often revolves around political conversation. The media is built off of any political scandal or any recent political news, while oftentimes it is difficult to see what is true and what is just a broad generalization of what news is.
How important politics is in a relationship is up to the couple themselves, but as the political climate intensifies, it gets more and more difficult to be able to put aside outlandish beliefs as politics and more as a moral issue or lack of knowledge.
Politics have become a test of voters’ moral values. With topics on the table such as women’s rights, inclusivity and gun control, what is marked on that ballot is a mark of your values.
Personally, finding out my boyfriend does not believe in a woman’s right to her own choice but believes it is okay for anyone to buy an assault rifle leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Politics have coercively implanted themselves into healthcare. A strong disagreement on healthcare is personally a major red flag. While right now I am definitely not thinking about having children, in the future, I want my husband to be happy to vaccinate my children. The thought of my own husband, “In sickness and in health,” would agree with putting a ban on my body does not seem like someone I would happily spend the rest of my life with.
The way I see it, politics are a major part of my life. Planning on a career in political journalism and being very politically involved makes politics a big part of what I do and enjoy, so dating someone out of my political party would be a tough split ticket ballot for me to cast.
