Which Kardashian Are You/Reality TV Stereotypes
November 28, 2018
There is scarce representation of strong, smart and independent women present in reality television; instead you see women with virtually no ambition beyond maintaining their looks or sex lives. The emphasis placed on the value of a woman’s looks over her intellectual capacity is a damaging stereotype present in many reality TV series.
A study by the Girl Scouts Institute of the United States found that eight out of ten girls ages eleven to seventeen watch reality TV because they believe that the programs “depict real life.” Regardless of why the shows are watched, millions of people witness the stereotypes that the industry promotes. Below are four stereotypes based off of popular reality TV show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”
The ‘Kourtney Kardashian”
In the show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” Kourtney is depicted as a health nut who is gluten free, dairy free and sugar free. She also appears to be very emotional and is often seen crying after someone (usually one of her sisters) raises their voice at her. She, like the rest of her sisters, works out to maintain her highly-talked about figure. Whether she’s with her ex-boyfriend Scott Disick or not, there’s always relationship drama in her life.
The “Kim Kardashian”
Kim Kardashian West, who is arguably the most famous Kardashian, is often depicted as the “mean girl” who cries at minor inconveniences. She is known for her hourglass figure and the power of her contour kit. Kim kardashian’s public image is usually associated with the risque pictures she posts on Instagram. She appears to have the “it’s my way or the highway”mindset and definitely has an eye for clothes, shoes, and ultra-expensive handbags.
The “Kris Jenner”
Kris Jenner is the “caregiver” not only because she is the mother, but because she holds the most responsibilities out of the Kardashian clan. She is an art collector and and is always trying to keep the peace between her family and friends. Her work and managing skills seem to consumer her whole identity. Jenner occasionally picks favorites and can cause rifts between her daughters.
The “Kylie Jenner”
Kylie appears to be young and ambitious and has the financial means to make her goals happen.. She is currently running her own company at the age of twenty-one and is a Forbes-recognized millionaire. She also has six dogs and seems to keep her private life more to herself. She kept her pregnancy a complete secret and protected her child’s privacy.
No matter whether these stereotypes are representative of the person or not, they are still promoted by the reality TV industry and probably always will be.
