Beginning on Jan. 7, multiple fires spread throughout southern California. The blaze began at 10:30 a.m., and since then has grown to almost 3,000 acres. The fires are spreading in the areas of the Pacific Palisades, Eaton Canyon, Hurst and Sepulveda Basin, with a recent fifth in Riverside County.
The winds have been reported as over 90 miles per hour, which is equivalent to the wind speed during a hurricane. The area of the fires has extremely low humidity levels, making the fires barely containable, and highly dangerous for Los Angeles County residents and beyond.
Since these fires have rapidly spread, over 30,000 residents have been evacuated from the Palisades, with 52,314 residents of Eaton being placed under a mandatory evacuation. Some residents evacuating were forced to abandon their vehicles and walk, due to extremely close proximity to the fire.
Many establishments have shut down, such as Universal Studios, and many schools, among others, to ensure the safety of visitors. Freeways have been closed due to the infernos destroying roads, with residents leaving by plane. Over 10,000 homes and buildings have been threatened by the flames.
