Fall is nearly done, and with winter around the corner, sports fans all over are looking forward to one thing; winter sports. Miami Palmetto Senior High has officially kicked off its winter sports for the 2024-25 season. A variety of sports are offered, such as basketball, soccer and wrestling.
One of the more popular sports that MPSH can expect to see a lot of is boys varsity soccer. With a new coach, the boys will be heading into a high-energy new season. The team began their season on Oct. 29, with a tournament played at Braddock High School.
Last year, the team made it to the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) finals, which has set a high bar for the upcoming season.
“We’re really looking forward to GMAC this year, and since we made the finals last year, hopefully we can win this year,” junior Noah Portugal said. “The school should expect a lot of wins.”
Portugal is a defensive back for the soccer team. He has been playing club soccer for 14 years, but this will be his second year playing for MPSH.
“We have a really good team this season. The new coach is good, and I think we’ll be really successful,” Portugal said.
Another season that Panther sports fans can look forward to is the girl’s varsity basketball season. The girls are anticipating the build of a new team family between members of the new roster once they lose some of their key players at graduation.
Last year, the team ended with an 11-7 record.
“We’re kind of starting from the bottom up this year, so just seeing us improve with our new team is probably what we’re looking forward to the most,” senior and varsity player Alessandra Falcon said. “The team is very dependent on our head coach, and he’s helped us out a lot these past four years.”
Falcon is a center and small forward for the girls’ varsity basketball team. She has been on the team for all four years of high school, and she has grown within the team.
“I really want to create a dynamic with the new players, and I think that us being able to play well with each other while having fun is the most important,” Falcon said.
MPSH’s winter sports have officially begun and every team is hoping to bring championships home to the school. The athletes, managers and coaches are working extremely hard for the school, and each one of them is committed to their sport and they continue to show off their extreme talent.
